He doesn't actually interpret it as either, but as a greeting to someone he can't see. He looks behind himself, suspicious, then gets to his feet in a way that has little relationship to the planet's gravity. The mud he'd been lying in doesn't stick.
He stares around, mercifully quietly, listening for any sound other than Crowley's harsh breathing.
